Even in the Declaration of Independence, among some of history's most ringing celebrations of the human spirit, Thomas Jefferson evoked the evil specter of Indians, accusing George III of having "endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes, and conditions.
